Kawakawa Kahawai

Just a bit of fun.

The Kahawai were just wild off Waikanae beach today - thousands of them everywhere - one cast one fish.

Just me (and family) and an Aussie guy fishing. The Aussie guy was having a ball.

We caught about 30 Kahawai between us - gave a dozen or so to people on the beach.

When I was leaving I saw someone doing some salt water fly fishing - even he caught one - we were watching him waiting for him to land the beast - but he must have been one of those light line ponces - we gave up - and went home to prepare our catch.

So we bled the Kahawai straight away - then smoked 2 and filleted 2.


  • 2 Smoked Kahawai
  • 2 Kahawai Fillets

Cheese Sauce

  • 1 1/2 Cups Tasty Cheese
  • 1/2 Cup Flower
  • 3 Cups Milk
  • 2 teaspoons Basil
  • 2 teaspoons Dried Kawakawa
Basically stir the Kahawai into the cheese sauce - then bake for 1 hour.

Look Kahawai is just great - just bleed and gut them straight away - remove the dark brown flesh - and cook same day. If you don't like my Kahawai fish pie - then YOU SUCK!
